Black Sabbath is one of the bands that originated heavy metal. Their nervous and unique sound paved the way to giants like
Sepultura and Cinderella.
I am no
expert on this band, I enjoy their sound and recognize some songs. Doing some
research to write about them, I discovered some facts worth sharing.
The name of
the band originated after a Boris Karloff film called Black Sabbath. It was
originally to be just the name of their first song on their first album. It
ended being the name of the band. They started a blues band called Earth. The
name Earth was already taken, so they changed the name and together the sound
too. They rehearsed across from a movie theater that played horror movies. The
band was shocked to see how popular these horror movies were. They figured that
a dark sound would be popular too. Around that time, most bands were playing
songs about love and peace. Sabbath wanted to be unique bringing a gothic
sound.
In 2005,
Black Sabbath was inducted to the UK hall of fame. Ozzy always wondered how
come they have not been inducted much earlier. The award was presented to the
band by their friend Brian May. In 2006, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
inducted the band, but Tony was unable to get their award home, since it was
confiscated by airport security as a weapon.
In 2002,
Ozzy, Tony, Phil Collins and Palladino from The Who played Paranoid at
Buckingham Palace to celebrate the Queen’s 50th year on the throne.
Prince William and Harry approached Tony wanting to know how come they have not
played the song Black Sabbath to the Queen.
