Going bananas at ART Basel!
The 2019 art fair is going bananas over Maurizio Cattelan’s new work, Comedian, sold for $120,000 on Wednesday during the VIP preview day in Miami Beach.
It only took a banana and some duct tape to get some of the “running billionaires to spend a good amount of dollars to be the proud possessor of the piece. The two first editions of Comedian sold so fast that Perrotin Gallery inflation the third (and final) edition to $150,000. The work shocked wave the art scene, making it to the international headlines and popping up in the Instagram feeds of users around the world.
On Saturday, out of nowhere, David Datuna, a New York-based performance artist removed the taped banana from the wall and ate it causing lots of drama around the high-profile art fair. Then on Sunday the ‘master piece’ was taken off view (after its popularity “caused several uncontrollable crowd movements” and a superb freak show to it’s crowd). What an expensive snack!
